As your dog chews, it is normal for BetterBone to wear down and release small rice-sized flakes or granules. This controlled flaking is designed to be safer than the sharp splinters or large chunks that can come from traditional bones, wood, antlers, or some synthetic chews. However, if your dog is breaking off larger pieces, discontinue use and switch to a larger size or harder density.
Inspect your BetterBone regularly and replace it when it shows moderate signs of wear. Selecting the right size and density—and replacing worn chews as needed—helps keep your dog safe, comfortable, and happily chewing.

This controlled flaking helps reduce the risk of injury to your dog's mouth, teeth, and digestive tract compared to traditional wood chews, antlers, rawhide, or some nylon chew toys that can break into harder, sharper pieces.
Because the material wears into small rounded granules instead of hard shards, any incidental ingestion is generally safer than swallowing larger chunks or sharp splinters that may cause irritation, choking hazards, or digestive issues. Small granules are a normal part of the chewing process and are typically passed naturally.
However, BetterBone is a chew toy—not a food product—and is not intended for consumption. Dogs should always be supervised during use. If your dog is tearing off large pieces or chunks, remove the chew immediately and consider sizing up or choosing a harder density better suited to their chewing style.
