BetterBone is a sustainable pet product brand powered by Vernovo, a proprietary wood-polymer composite technology developed by our parent company, Blue Standard Inc. Every BetterBone product is made from bio-based alternatives to conventional petroleum-based plastics — materials that are measurably lower in carbon intensity, free of hazardous chemical additives, and non-persistent in managed end-of-life environments.
Our commitment is grounded not in aspiration alone, but in third-party verified data. In 2025, independent assessments by Nova-Institut (Germany), TÜV SÜD Product Service (Germany), and BOKU University (Austria) confirmed that the Vernovo materials in BetterBone products reduce carbon emissions by up to 79% compared to virgin plastics, contain no detectable PFAS or heavy metals above safety thresholds, and demonstrate active biodegradation under industrial composting conditions.
We continuously seek new ways to strengthen this commitment — through material innovation, supply chain integrity, and transparent environmental reporting.
Every BetterBone product is manufactured from Vernovo, a composite formulated with up to 100% bio-based inputs depending on formulation. The primary structural component is sustainably sourced softwood fiber, combined with plant-based and bio-based polymers derived from renewable agricultural feedstocks such as corn starch and sugarcane. We use no virgin petroleum-based plastics as primary material inputs in any BetterBone product.
We are committed to measuring and reducing the carbon intensity of everything we produce. An independent Life Cycle Assessment by nova-Institut GmbH, conducted in compliance with ISO 14040/14044 standards, confirmed that Vernovo formulations generate 67–79% less CO₂ than virgin ABS and consume a fraction of the fossil resources required by conventional plastics.
In 2025,, BetterBone and Blue Standard avoided an estimated 203.4 tonnes of CO₂ emissions relative to virgin ABS — equivalent to approximately 830,000 km driven by an average passenger vehicle. At cradle-to-gate, Vernovo produces just a fraction of the emissions of virgin ABS, with net-negative carbon potential when biogenic carbon storage is considered.
We hold ourselves to the strictest available chemical safety standards — because the materials in our products go in your dog's mouth. In February 2026, TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH conducted comprehensive chemical testing of Vernovo raw materials under DIN EN 71-3:2021-06 (heavy metal migration) and DIN EN 17681-1:2025-06 (PFAS), applying the most stringent EU regulatory limits.
The result: PASS across all tested categories, all samples. The Vernovo materials in BetterBone products contain no detectable PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), no phthalates, no bisphenol-A, no heavy metal stabilizers, and no brominated flame retardants. All results were verified against EU Regulation 2019/1021 (Persistent Organic Pollutants), REACH Annex XVII, and REACH SVHC requirements.
The TÜV SÜD testing specifically applied EN 71-3 Category III limits — the most stringent classification, designed for materials subject to biting, scraping, sucking, or licking. This is directly applicable to pet chew products. Pet owners can trust that the materials in every BetterBone have been independently verified to be free of the chemicals of greatest concern.
Unlike conventional nylon and plastic chews that persist in the environment for centuries — fragmenting into microplastics that accumulate in soil, waterways, and food chains — the Vernovo materials in BetterBone products are designed to biodegrade under managed end-of-life conditions.
Independent testing by BOKU University (Vienna, Austria), conducted under OECD 301B / EN ISO 14852 protocols, demonstrated that Vernovo materials achieve 67–68% biodegradation relative to cellulose after 24 weeks in controlled aerobic conditions, with degradation still actively progressing at test conclusion. When we describe our materials as "non-persistent," we mean non-persistent in industrial composting systems — controlled aerobic, microbially active environments where biodegradation is measurable as conversion of the material's carbon into CO₂ and biomass. BetterBone products should be directed to industrial composting where available, or follow the instructed end-of-life route, consistent with responsible use and disposal.
BetterBone and Blue Standard operate a zero-waste manufacturing process. Every gram of Vernovo material that enters our production line is accounted for. Off-cuts, trimmings, runner systems, and any non-conforming parts generated during injection molding are collected, reground, and reintroduced directly into the production cycle. Nothing leaves our facility as manufacturing waste bound for landfill.
This closed-loop production model means that the raw material we purchase is the raw material that becomes the finished product — eliminating the production scrap streams that are an accepted cost of business in conventional pet product manufacturing. The result is a material utilization rate that approaches 100%, reducing both cost and environmental impact at the point of manufacture.
Through our partnership with Tree-Nation, BetterBone, and Blue Standard invest directly in verified global reforestation. In 2025, we planted 8,675 trees across international reforestation projects, representing approximately 8.67 hectares of restored forest and capturing over 641 tonnes of CO₂ — more than six times our total material production emissions for the year. Every tree is verified with species identification, GPS coordinates, and projected CO₂ sequestration data.
Our forest is publicly viewable at tree-nation.com/profile/blue-standard-inc.
Beyond our zero-waste production floor, we are committed to reducing waste across the full product lifecycle. Vernovo's bio-based composition means that at end-of-life, BetterBone products do not contribute to the accumulation of permanent plastic pollution. Our LCA models confirm strong environmental performance under realistic end-of-life scenarios, and we continue to work toward expanding access to industrial composting infrastructure for our products and the communities we serve.
We maintain supply chains spanning the United States, Germany, Austria, and Croatia, and work with our suppliers to ensure equitable and responsible sourcing. Our wood fiber is sustainably sourced, our bio-based polymer inputs are traceable to agricultural feedstocks, and our manufacturing operations in Croatia are optimized for energy efficiency.
Every sustainability commitment made by BetterBone and Blue Standard is backed by our leadership and supported by independent, third-party data. We do not make environmental claims we cannot substantiate. This statement, the LCA data it references, the TÜV SÜD chemical safety testing, the BOKU biodegradability study, and our Tree-Nation reforestation records are all available for review by customers, partners, and regulators.
We publish this commitment as part of our ongoing mission to replace conventional pet products with materials that are better for pets, people, and the planet — and to prove it with science.
