🦴 Safe Chewing

Safe Chewing Guidelines

BetterBone is made from safe, sustainable plant-based materials — but like any chew, a little common sense goes a long way. Here's everything you need to know to keep your pup safe.

⚠️
BetterBone is a chew toy, not a treat. Our bones are not substitutes for food and should not be ingested. While the plant-based material is non-toxic, BetterBone is designed for chewing only. Always supervise your dog during chew sessions and replace the bone when it shows signs of wear.
Replacement Guide

When to replace your BetterBone

1
The ends are 50% worn. Check the dental ridges and nubs — if they're thoroughly worn down and the knuckle contours are no longer visible, it's time for a new bone.
2
The bone has worn to a swallowable size. Once it's small enough that your dog could swallow it whole, remove it immediately and replace.
3
Visible cracks, splinters, or large chunks. If pieces larger than a grain of rice or oatmeal flake are breaking off, remove the bone and move up to a harder density.
4
All larger ends have been chewed off. Once the three main ends of the wishbone are gone, the bone has served its purpose — toss it and grab a new one.
Ingestion Guidance

What if my dog swallows some?

Small flakes are normal — large chunks are not.

BetterBone is designed to flake by design, protecting your dog's teeth from cracking. Tiny pieces — similar in size to oatmeal flakes or rice grains — should pass through your dog's digestive tract without issue.

If your dog is getting larger chunks off the bone, that's a sign to move up one density level. We offer free exchanges for any reason, including getting the wrong durability — so don't worry if you started with the wrong one.

If you're ever concerned about ingestion, contact your veterinarian.

Supervision Tips

Best practices for safe chew sessions

👁️
Always superviseMonitor your dog during every chew session, especially the first few times.
⏱️
Limit session timeWe recommend chew sessions of 1 hour or less per day to prevent tooth wear and keep the bone novel.
🦷
Check dental health firstMake sure your dog has healthy, strong teeth before introducing any chew — especially BetterBone Hard.
👟
Store safelyWhen not in use, keep BetterBone out of the way — it's a hard material that can be a trip hazard if left on the floor.
Picking the Right Density

Starting with the right hardness matters

Density quick guide
Light
Puppies, seniors, and gentle chewers. Flakes by design — similar durability to rawhide. Best for light gnawing.
Moderate
Most adult dogs and everyday chewers. Comparable to nylon chews. Our most popular density — a great starting point.
Hard
Power chewers and destroyers. Closest to antler in durability. Ensure your dog has strong, healthy teeth before use.
