BetterBone LIGHT — perfect for teething puppies, older dogs (around 10 to 11 and older), and light chewers. Expect small flakes to come off (this is by design, to protect teeth).
BetterBone MODERATE — the balanced middle: more durable than LIGHT, yet gentler on teeth than nylon or our HARD bone. Try this if LIGHT isn't lasting long enough, your dog is taking big chunks off, or HARD is simply too hard to enjoy.

Yes. Flaking is entirely normal and is how the BetterBone is designed. All three durabilities flake. We developed BetterBone LIGHT to be gentle on teeth by making it softer than industry-standard materials, reducing the chance of cracked teeth compared with nylon, rubber, and other highly processed chews.
If your dog is working through a LIGHT bone too quickly, try MODERATE or HARD. Please make sure your dog's teeth are healthy and strong before giving them any BetterBone.
BetterBone is not meant to be eaten and is not a meal substitute. That said, if your dog does swallow small pieces while chewing, pieces smaller than a grain of rice or an oatmeal flake can pass safely through their digestive tract. BetterBone is made with up to 95% plant derived materials.
Our ingredients are plant-based and sourced from the food industry. BetterBone is effectively non-soluble fibre, so small quantities pass harmlessly.
Please supervise your dog while they chew. If your dog is taking off too many shavings, or chunks larger than a grain of rice or oatmeal, remove the BetterBone or reduce chewing time. We recommend trying a higher durability if this happens.
Choosing the right durability can feel tricky — but you'll never be stuck with the wrong chew. If you pick the wrong one, donate it to a local shelter and we'll send you the right bone free. Every dog gets the perfect chew, and shelter dogs benefit too.
