What is your dog chewing on? Why BetterBone chose Cellulose & Vegetable oil for the health and safety of your dog and planet.

  • 4 min read

At BetterBone, we believe in creating a healthier, happier chew experience for dogs—one that’s both healthier and sustainable. Unlike traditional industry standard nylon, poly propelene, PVC, and other plastic chews, which can expose dogs to a variety of potentially harmful chemicals like BPA, BPF, phthalates, parabens, PFAS, and more, BetterBone offers an eco-friendly alternative made from up to 90% cellulose and the rest is vegetable oil sourced directly from the European food industry. This choice of material not only protects our planet but also provides your furry friend with a non-toxic, all-natural, enjoyable chew.

Why We Chose Cellulose?

Cellulose is a natural dietary fiber sourced from plants, well-known for it use in thousands of foods you and I eat everyday, and versatility. In our bones, cellulose brings durability and the flexibility that dogs need without the harsh chemicals found in synthetic materials. Traditional nylon products often include additives like PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), which can be harmful over time and are commonly used to make products more resistant to moisture and heat. BetterBone, however, is entirely free from PFAS, BPA, and other chemical additives, making it a safer choice for pets who deserve only the best.

BetterBone's material combines food-grade cellulose with plant-based biopolymers, ensuring your dog's chew toy is as natural as it is durable. The plant-sourced materials are certified renewable and eco-friendly, aligning with our commitment to sustainability and your pet’s health.

Health Benefits Beyond the Chew

Inside of BetterBone Dog Chew

Not only is BetterBone’s cellulose-based material safer for ingestion, but it’s also gentle on teeth in our softer densities (Soft and medium) vs industry standard nylon chews. We designed our material and bones to resist splintering, and flake off, reducing the chance of cracked teeth—a common issue with traditional hard chews like nylon. The unique surface of BetterBone products features tiny ridges and nubs that help clean your dog’s teeth as they chew, keeping plaque and tartar at bay and supporting fresh breath and overall oral health.

This picture show the inside of a BetterBone showing the natural cellulose composition instead of plastic chews that create microplastics and fill your dog full of unsavory materials.

Different Densities for Different Dogs

We know every dog is unique, so we offer BetterBone in three different densities: soft, medium, and hard. This lets you choose the perfect option based on your dog's size, chewing strength, and personal preferences. All densities maintain the same commitment to safety and sustainability, crafted from natural ingredients to deliver strength, flexibility, and the right degree of softness or hardness.

Our cellulose-based material also means the bone is perfectly safe if small pieces are swallowed incidentally from chewing. In fact, these tiny bits can safely pass through your dog’s system, providing peace of mind every time your pup plays. Please make sure to always monitor your dog during chew/play time.

A Step Forward in Sustainability

We understand the importance of a sustainable, eco-conscious choice in every product. BetterBone’s natural materials come from renewable sources that are food-grade certified, which means that every bone we make not only stands up to tough chewing but also aligns with your eco-friendly values. By choosing BetterBone, you’re choosing a product that’s crafted to reduce our impact on the environment while caring for your pet’s health.

So! What are the Potential Effects of Excess Dietary Fiber: If your dog ingests an unusually large amount of non-soluble dietary fiber, such as cellulose, it may experience digestive discomfort. This would be similar to if a dog ingest a large amount of nylon as well except in this case your dog is ingesting microplastics.

  • Increased Bowel Movements: Fiber adds bulk to stool, which can lead to an increase in the frequency or volume of bowel movements. If your dog has ingested a lot of BetterBone material, you may notice more frequent trips outside.

  • Loose Stools: Ingesting high amounts of fiber can sometimes result in loose stools. This is generally self-resolving and passes once the excess fiber is processed by the digestive system.

  • Gas and Bloating: Non-soluble fiber, like cellulose, isn’t digestible by dogs, meaning it moves through the digestive tract relatively unchanged. For some dogs, this can lead to mild bloating or increased gas as the fiber passes through.

If your dog has any of these issues please consider moving to the next higher density of BetterBone as this only occurs in our softer densities when a dog is too strong for the current density selection.
