Why BetterBone Doesn't Use Rendered Animal Protein or Animal-Fat Flavoring

Rendered animal ingredients have a legitimate place in pet nutrition. AAFCO explains that rendering cooks animal tissues, removes much of the water and fat, and produces concentrated protein and mineral ingredients. Properly manufactured rendered meals can be safe and useful in complete pet foods.

That single fact changed our formulation question.

We did not ask, "Which rendered meat ingredient should make the chew smell appealing?"

We asked:

Our answer is no.

Reason 1: Allergy-conscious chewing should start with the protein source

Food allergy in dogs commonly involves dietary proteins. Beef, dairy, chicken, wheat, and lamb appear among the more frequently reported allergens in veterinary literature, though an individual dog can react to other proteins and may react to more than one source.

A meat-based scent system can introduce the exact protein a pet parent is trying to avoid.

By removing intentional animal-derived ingredients from the current formulation, BetterBone avoids adding:

·  Beef protein

·  Pork protein

·  Fish protein

·  Dairy protein

·  Egg protein

·  Collagen or gelatin

·  Generic rendered animal protein

This does not make BetterBone universally allergen-free. Plant and yeast ingredients can matter to some dogs. It does establish a clear, broader standard: animal-protein-free.

Reason 2: Restricted-diet dogs still need an outlet

A veterinary elimination diet may remove treats, rawhide, animal tissue chews, dental products, food-filled toys, and flavored medications. The dog still has a natural urge to chew.

A non-food, animal-protein-free toy gives pet parents and veterinarians another category to evaluate. It can preserve enrichment without automatically introducing another meat source.

Reason 4: No animal-fat flavoring means one less oxidation pathway

Rancidity is primarily the oxidation or breakdown of fats. Heat, oxygen, light, time, packaging, and antioxidants affect stability.

Animal-fat coatings and palatants can be managed successfully in foods and treats, but they create a stability requirement. Research on pet foods made with rendered protein meals shows that oxidized and rancid sensory attributes can increase during storage, particularly without effective antioxidant protection.

BetterBone does not use animal-fat flavoring. That removes the specific animal-derived lipid oxidation pathway from our scent system.
